Successful Pumping 101

One of the most important predictors of your success with your pump is your willingness to learn and be very proactive about your self-care. But also know that you are not alone. All the members of your healthcare team can help, including your consultant, diabetes nurse, GP & Practice Nurse. And your pump company is important, too!

At Animas, we're "on call" anytime you need us (day or night) while you're learning to use your pump, as well as afterward.

Here's what to expect as you make your way into the world of pumping.

Step 1: Getting ready

Learn as much as you can about how your body reacts to food and activity before you begin pumping.

Specifically, you'll want to know as much as you can about:

  • How carbohydrates play a role in blood sugar control
  • How to accurately count grams of carbohydrates in the foods you eat
  • How to adjust your insulin doses properly, based on how many carbs you've eaten, your activity level, and factors like illness or stress
  • How to correct blood sugar levels that are out of your target range

Don't worry — you'll get used to it! And the better you know your body and how its insulin needs change, the better equipped you'll be to achieve improved blood sugar control.

Step 2: Getting used to pumping

Your first weeks on the pump are a training period. During this time, your healthcare professional will provide you with initial basal rates and bolus formulas. You'll also be learning how to properly connect and disconnect your infusion set.

It will feel new at first, but every time you go through the motions, it will get easier and easier. And we are only ever just a phone call or email away.

Step 3: Pumping for real

Once you feel comfortable, it's time to start pumping. This is when the initial basal rates and boluses set by your healthcare professional will be fine-tuned for your specific needs. Achieving the correct amounts of insulin is an ongoing process, so it will help to be patient and keep the perspective that living with diabetes is a journey of lifelong learning.
